Tiny House Project

Tiny House Project

Welcome to my tiny house project! I became obsessed with tiny houses back around 2009, but after studying the local city ordinances, I decided I wouldn’t be able to live in one in an urban environment. This was a deal-breaker for me because I’m an urbanite to the core. Since then, cities are becoming open to the idea of permitting tiny homes as a way to compensate for high rents.

A tiny house would give me the security of owning a home, along with the flexibility of being able to move my home if conditions in one area of the country became less pleasant. (For example, water shortage or economic impacts.) I think about those things as an environmentalist. And, as an environmentalist, I want my house to have a low ecological footprint: solar, water collection, energy efficient windows, good insulation, and Energy Star appliances.

I consider this a group project. I need help from my friends. I’m going to commission an architectural design for a tiny house and have the shell built by professionals using rugged safety standards that make the house wind resistant and compliant with RV and home building standards. To save money, I will finish out the inside.

Once I have a design and materials list, I can start posting about the things I need. These will include building materials, appliances, labor hours, a place to store materials, a place to park the shell while I’m working on it, and a place to park it permanently where I can live in it.

Things I need before I start building:

  • An architectural drawing
  • A materials list
  • A building company to work with
  • A place to park my shell while I’m completing the inside
  • All my major appliances

Things I need for the shell:

  • Siding
  • Metal roofing
  • Exterior door
  • Windows

Things I need to finish the inside (quantities and specifics to be determined):

  • Countertop
  • Kitchen sink
  • Wall shelf for dishes (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10241339/)
  • Kitchen cabinets
  • Stairs with built-ins
  • Soaking tub
  • Surround for wood stove
  • Bathroom door
  • Bathroom sink and hardware
  • Bathroom sink cabinet
  • Shower tile
  • Shower enclosure
  • Electrical work
  • Plumbing
  • Kitchen faucet (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40211576/)
  • Insulation
  • Carpentry

Things I will need once the home is completed:

  • A flat place to park my 28′ tiny house with access to 30 amp electricity and potable water intake
  • Place to bury or store compost from toilet
  • Place to discharge treated gray water
  • Sources for cleaning products (personal and household) that are biodegradable and safe to be discharged outdoors
  • A place to dispose of collected urine (either burying or diluting to use as fertilizer)
  • Space to set up solar panels
  • The ability to tie down the home
