Why being in a hurry is expensive

There are many disadvantages to being in a hurry. For one, being in a hurry implies that you are under stress and you are not thinking about the present moment. Instead, you are thinking about the moments ahead and the time at which you would like to arrive at your destination – whether in a car or at your desk. Being in a hurry means that all you care about is where you’re going and not where you are. But once you get where you’re going, you will probably be in a hurry to get somewhere else.

Buying stuff

Being in a hurry is also expensive. When you’re in a hurry, you perceive your choices as limited. For instance, if you’re in a hurry to buy something, you won’t take the time to shop around for the best price. You also won’t wait until that item goes on sale. Trust me when I say that eventually everything goes on sale, and I’m usually patient enough to wait for that to happen.

If you’re NOT in a hurry to own something, you can usually find it used on Craigslist or in a thrift store.

When you need to buy something, realize that it’s not an emergency. Even if something is on sale, there will always be another one for you to buy. Wait until you can afford it. You’ve lived without it this long, and you can live without it for longer.

Driving

If you’re in a hurry in your car, you will likely use more gas since speeding generally leads to worse gas mileage.

How can you not be in a hurry in your car? Leave earlier. But no matter what time you leave, realize that worrying about whether you will arrive on time will not reduce traffic. And hurrying to get there can result in a speeding ticket or accident, either of which will cost you big-time.

If you’re in a hurry and need to use Uber, you may get stuck paying surge pricing.

If you’re not in a hurry to get most places, you don’t even need to own a car, which is the biggest savings of all.

Slow down and live in the moment. Consider your decisions and why you are making them.
